Stand By Me. Playing for Change By Roger Ridley and other Musicians

And the night following the Lord stood by him, and said,
Be of good cheer, Paul: for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem,
so must thou bear witness also at Rome.

Truly friends this is a must view! You’ll appreciate this singers transparent zeal, the song’s sentiment, the powerful global experience on video and the concept behind the mission of the Playing for Change Campaign, something you may wish to support. I trust God that it was no accident that when I should have turned off the computer and rested my weary soul, a video caught my eye of Mr. Roger Ridgley, I clicked the triangle and was captured. I was mesmerized by the video of Stand By Me and really appreciative that Mr. Mark Johnson founder of Playing for Change realized that this musician’s humanity and yes, his soul stirring voice and others was not to be ignored. I am sure you’ll agree these are no ordinary street musicians and certainly no commonplace fundraising campaign. Learn all about it:

“Roger Ridley and his music embody everything that music is : soul, perseverance, and talent. He has often been called “the voice of God” by the other street musicians on the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica, California. His dedication to his audience is clear, traveling from his home in Las Vegas, Nevada to his spot in Santa Monica every Saturday and giving his best performance before returning home that night. It was Roger’s performance of Stand By Me that sent Playing for Change1 off on its mission to connect the world through music by adding other musicians to his recording.

One day while walking down the promenade, Mark Johnson2, creator of “Playing for Change” heard Roger singing “Stand By Me” in the distance. He ran to witness the performance and realized that Roger’s voice, soul, and passion had to be shared with the rest of the world.

Playing for Change is a multimedia movement created to inspire,
connect, and bring peace to the world through music. The idea for this project rose from a common belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people. No matter whether people come from different geographic, political, economic, spiritual or ideological backgrounds, music has the universal power to transcend and unite us as one human race. And with this truth firmly fixed in our minds, we set out to share it with the world.”

“Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy.
Then it was said, among the nations,
“The Lord has done great things for them.”

Downing Gross Cultural Arts Center is a precious pearl that sits beautifully nestled in shell of Tidewater’s Newport News, VA. perfectly situated in the heart it’s urban community.
Oh, friends this center reminds me of a heart beat, with a new life blood joyfully pumping. It’s really a new enterprising engery source circulating in Newport News. Innovative resources and progrgams are once again available to all that are interested underneathe the roof of The Downing Gross Cultural Arts Center. It’s truly alive and thriving with wonderful opportunities to enrich and broaden the minds of the young and not so young persons that hunger for artistic renewal and rejuvennation!
Oh, yes I love it, can’t you tell? Downtown Newport News has this unique center open to the public, and I am so proud that this community cultural arts center exists in my back yard. And more importantly it’s open and accessible to the neighborhood , guests and those in Tidewater Virginia!

It’s a marvelous facility that not only celebrates the arts, promotes cultural enrichment, but beckons the visitor to bring their family, friends, churches, classmates and classrooms again and again to partake in the myriad of outstanding activities.

I regret not having my camera with me yesterday evening during my first visit, it was a visual and performing arts banquet. I tried to register as much of the atmosphere mentally as I could stand. I eagerly awaited an evening starring Amber Fisher, Ron Jenkins and Jeffro Jam of Flow Theatre. They provided the Ella Fitzgerald Theatre audience a stellar and moving choreopoem experience. It was a powerful presentation that is forever etched in our hearts and minds. This Off Broadway Stage production of Flow Theatre’s Our Young Black Men Are Dying And Nobody Seems To Care, is a unique form of Choreotheater that not only entertains, but empowers the audience to become an important part of our social solution.

I walked, ( but really was skipping in my spirit) through the modern galleries, and peaked in the ladies rooms, smiled at the guards, spoke to the visitors, laughed with my family and enjoyed the overall ambiance.Truly, truly I knew I was blessed to be there. Be sure to visit their web site to learn of the upcoming events and do frequent this place often. You just never know who you’ll meet and what you’ll behold !

The doors to The Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center are open folks, come on-step right in and go with the flow!

Soulful Heather Headley with anointed Smokie Norful really sing and more importantly vocally celebrate Jesus is Love. This is truly an uplifting and a reassuring ballad that Jesus is love.

While googling the title of the song, it came to mind, “How do you know that Jesus is love?” I pray that your knowledge base of Jesus is not just through learned scripture but it’s experiential!

It’s a first- hand understanding that Jesus is love, light, our friend, Savior, our shepherd, healer, deliverer and authority. Depoending on your frame of reference he’s that and more! It’s a “ I know that I know, that I know experience !” Yes, for many it’s a song and a walk with God, an agape love relationship that has stood the test of time where God’s love abounds daily and most certaily in our 11th hour crises. We understand that in and during our aching and grieving moments, during our lonely moments , during our trying moments and especially in your waking moments the love of Jesus is evident!

I learned of Heaven’s Inspirations website, the selected scriptures appropriately speaks and references God’s Love http://www.heavensinspirations.com/word-love.html.

Oh friends the scriptures are good and necessary, but it’s like standing in the rain with a closed umbrella, there’s not much benefit in just holding the closed umbrella in our hands during a down pour! It’s true benefit occurs during opening of the umbrella to receive shelter from the storm.

Well, I’d like to believe It’s the same with having scriptures at the stroke of a mouse or in arms reach and not doing much more than reading the words. Our help is provided when we invite Jesus’ love to be the center of our lives, and then the wonderful scriptures are tucked in our heart and realized in our souls. It’s reminders of God’s love, the worth and weight of those divine instructions are beneficial if we trust the word of God, implement them, apply them, speak them, believe them for Jesus is Love. Amen

“I do not weep at the world — I am too busy sharpening my oyster knife.”
“I am not tragically colored. There is no great sorrow dammed up in my soul, nor lurking behind my eyes.”
“Mama exhorted her children at every opportunity to ‘jump at de sun.’ We might not land on the sun, but at least we would get off the ground.”

“Love, I find, is like singing. Everybody can do enough to satisfy themselves, though it may not impress the neighbors as being very much.”

“Those that don’t got it, can’t show it. Those that got it, can’t hide it.”

“Nothing that God ever made is the same thing to more than one person. That is natural. There is no single face in nature, because every eye that looks upon it, sees it from its own angle. So every man’s spice-box seasons his own food.”

Zora is so ingenius, she’s my friend. I fell in love with my very first book of hers: Their Eyes Were Watching God! An when it was captured for a made for TV movie, well it was truly a taste of honey! Thanks Oprah for your love of Zora, also! It’s powerful, riveting, moving piece of literature that causes the reader to do some serious soul searching. It grabs your heart and doesn’t let go. In my prized personal library are several of Zora’s books and 2 of Their Eyes Were Watching God with foreword written by Ruby Dee and filled with beautfully etched sketches by Jerry Pinkney throughout the book. This is truly my simple abundance collection. But, I just don’t want to brag on my novels, nor tout that I ‘ve appreciated the Harlem Renaissance. writers that impacted our world.
I believe that God has something that He wishes to convey to us regarding, blessings delayed are not blessings denied! I just felt it was time tio share some Zora and encourage our hearts especially during this economic thunder storm!
Zora didn’t die with a Madame C. J. Walker bankroll, instead she died heartbroken, penniless, without many family members and colleagues singing her praises. It appears as though she was very much alone and abandoned, but for the grace of God the story hadn’t yet been told about Zora! God would have it that Zora Neale Hurston’s death would not have it’s final say! Contrary to what may have appeared for her, as a world of dashed promises, dejected hope, defeated relationships, poor living arrangements, alone and broken during her final transition! It makes you want to holler. But, the Holy Ghost reminds me that that was simply a dry season. I am so glad about that reality. It gives us hope, that even in death, as believers in the Gospel of Christ we triumph! She may have felt that obscurity, lonliness and poverty would triumph over her, but not so.
Zora had no idea the rich legacy she’d leave us.
The world is a better place because she was here! Why she’s the hallmark of the Harlem Renaissance, she’s the quintessential voice of our time, she’s the literary giant with muscle, humor and an appreciation of the southern dialect to, boot. She’s the anthropologist, the folklorist, “the gifted Zora” who’s work continues to Jump Up at the Sun! Visit National Public Radio’s stimulating conversations, reference and Google her name-enjoy what awaits you!
We delight in her voice which is as strong and resillient as when she wrote many of her masterpieces! You are in for a treat, the more you read of her, the more you’ll want to learn about this fascinating human being!
Yes, it will give you great cause to celebrate life, our divine inheritance and blessed independence, as you contemplate and appreciate the nature of God, our inner strength, resolve and beauty even in our rollercoaster seasons of wilderness.
Thank you for living Zora and not being afraid to embrace the posssibilities of life!

Give thanks to the Lord for he is good.

Psalm 136:1

I Dreamed a Dream sung by Britain’s Susan Boyle will take your breath away. Her voice is anointed!

God has provided her with an outstanding voice. Yesterday, I took a few moments during my work day to catch-up on the world’s news and there was a story regarding this 47 year old woman, who apparently decided to entered an audition of Britain’s version of American Idle entitled: Britain’s Got Talent. And did she ever surprise and wow the audience. Needless to say it was apparent that the judges were stunned. From the looks on their faces they didn’t expect that presentation!

Yes, their jaws were dragging the ground, but their hearts soared. I only learned very little of her background and discerned from the judge’s questions she answered, that her mother who is now deceased encouraged her to sing and pursue her dreams. The audition and début was a result of Susan paying tribute to her mother.

Susan’s voice is that of an angel, but more importantly the song she choose I Dreamed a Dream resonated in my spirit and from the millions of Youtube site visits, others were deeply curious and emotionally touched. Her presence on stage was a testament that God is active and does fulfill His promises. Susan’s confidence and voice aren’t what the audience anticipated! She doesn’t have the appearance of a stereotypical size 3 “super star” or “diva”. And we do know often apperance means so much in this world! But isn’t that just like God? He displays, show-up and shows off whom ever He desires. Susan appears to be your everyday person and that’s what I find so appealing, it reminds me that we can’t predict who a person is , nor what they’re made of! Thank you Lord!

Before long we too realize that i doesn’t matter what lense the world is viewing us in because when the divine opportunity is presented for us, it’s our time, our season for the realization of dreams fulfilled!

Friends, I believe that the Holy Ghost is imploring us not only to celebrate the coming success for Susan, but to see yourselves, standing confidently, assured that the Lord has greater good, a “knock your socks off ” experience where you too can expect the unexpected!

Joyfully shine, shine and let the light of the Lords radiate in and through you! Yeah, sing your song and remember it’s never, never, ever too late to for your spot light moment. Dream your dreams people, build your furniture, set sail on your voyages, scale your mountains, erect your bell towers, teach the children, adopt the villages , feed your minds, and be on a hot pursuit for your passions. Susan I am singing with you!

“Every scripture is God breathed, so that the man of God may be complete and proficient, well-fitted and thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

2 Timothy 3:16-17

This is an admirable photo of our Commander -in-Chief, President Barak Obama that I had the opportunity of seeing for the first time today. I visited Essence Magazine’s Obama Watch site and saw this awesome photo! I am sure that I must have caught a glimpse on CNN or the Huffington Post. But I apparently, the Holy Ghost was on assignment and wanted to not only appreciate the photo, but the caption as well, which reads:

“Victory Is Ours

President Obama thanks American troops for their service at Camp Victory during his surprise trip to Baghdad, Iraq, on April 7.”

Many things came to mind, first the music which is a standard song in many congregations: Victory is Mine! The photto conveys how valiant our US Military is, not to overlook how poised and confident and appreciative our President is! I recall the many bible verses that capture the theme of our having victory not just in the earthly relm, but most assuredly in Christ Jesus! Today friends I’d like to beleive that we’re trusting in God and daily we’re acknowledging, yes witnessing God’s grace in the depth and the substance of our faith . This insight allows us to soars as live through trails. Sometimes with the smoke and dust still in our clothing , but the furnace and battle fields of life haven’t consumed us! Can I get a witness?

“To Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory…” Jude 1:24

Indeed we are equipped not only for the physical battle, but the spiritual battles that come with diliberate intention to do us in-harm us and prevent us from thinking like victors. Often the biggest battle is waged in our hearts and minds. Overcoming fear ( false evidence appearing real) is a real hurdle in our victorious living marathons! It takes work, oh but it’s possible! We must intentionally renounce the enemy-real and imagined! Let’s be poised and confident that God is on our side!

I encourage you to fight the good fight, prevail on your faith sojourns, pray for and over each other. Believe that deliverance will come, dreams birthed, and struggles will subside! Healing is evident.

Finally my friends be assured that when you’re fatigued and war weary, God will fight our battles and never foresake us. Yes, God has equipped us with everything we need to reach our destinations-yes our destines are in view. Victory belongs to us, its yours and mine! Visit this site and join Dorothy Norwood in declaring our victory! To God be the glory!

A Post It Again Praise Moment!

May the Lord of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 15:13

Oh this is wonderful! That I am sure of is what was resonating in my spirit. Instead of continuing to work beyond 5pm, waiting for my husband to arrive so we could journey home, I had the bright idea to shut the computer down, close the folders and leave like others with common sense and prepare to end the work day. So there I sat on the bench, with book in hand, tote and lunch bag by my side and I began to breathe in and out. This was truly calming. I recognized the divine-the divine moment of the here and now.

God was truly in the atmosphere and I recognized immediately that He also dwelled in me, my very breath!

The trees swayed, the warm breeze was refreshing and the beautiful blue water that cascades and moves around the fringes of Hampton’s campus is truly a site to behold. So it just felt good to be outdoors and present in this moment.

I then opened and resumed my reading of BeBe Moore Campbell novel: Singing in the Comeback Choir. And reality of her singing career[is shared with] Maxine:

“When I was in my prime, I was so proud of my voice, but I didn’t really appreciate it. I’d hit a note that could crack glass and wonder how I got there. I’d be holding that note long enough to pass out and searching in the crowd to see if anybody important was listening. And I’d be all the way back down before I remembered that I hadn’t even enjoyed it: not getting there, not the being there, not even the coming back. I was so busy trying to get somewhere.” Pg 318

Did that ever hit me like a ton of bricks friends.

I read the passage at least three times. Glanced up and appreciated that there was a young man skateboarding, zooming past me. He moved effortlessly it appeared with ease and sheer enjoyment. Apparently he had mastered this skateboard. As I marveled at this summer school student I really appreciated what God was expressing to me in real time! And really began to appreciate how triumphant we can live if we pay attention and value our life’s moments. Admittedly we can miss out on the important personal and developmental milestones-living! Wouldn’t you agree that the Holy Ghost is amazing?

Friends God has spoken through BeBe Moore Campbell’s character Lindy. Lindy’s drive to reach stardom, get from there to here, her drive to have a stellar singing career and grab the brass ring, was admirable but she understands that she missed the mark, missed the opportunity to celebrate all of life’s offerings and be content in the moment!

Well, indeed the revelation that Lindy had as she expressed herself was a healing moment for me. I too have hurried through life, desiring immediate changes and like Lindy have missed so many opportunities to spiritually tune in and rejoice along the way instead my focus was fixed on anticipating the next life’s issue, the next and the next!

It was cathartic- I read on and there it was-Lindy placed her hands to her mouth and kissed them. I then knew she who battered by racism, alcoholism, guilt and anger was finally appreciative, thankful in her soul for her life and her songs. This surely was a moment of personal worship-not about her accomplishments but of God’s tender grace and mercies.

Be joyful, always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances.
I Thessalonians 5:16-18

My spirit uttered, Lord I thank you! And my grocery list of thanks began to roll out of my mind! Lord I thank you for the finally being fifty and free. Free to look back and not wonder, I now know it was you who kept me! I won’t be embarrassed about my setbacks. I can stop sweating the small stuff and remember to appreciate all the simple abundance you’ve provided for me! I thank you because I know it’s a miracle to just be able to open my eyes and see! See all you want me to see, to feel all that I feel and to love all that I love. God I will never worry so much about reaching the plateau without being thankful for being able to scale the summit!

What is your spirit uttering? What of God’s grace in your life?

Today let’s get our spiritual skateboards out and move like that young man on campus, being assured, confident, healed, joyful, grateful and confident that God is the wind beneath our wings! And for those of us a little frail from the journey, fear not-be sure to breathe deeply and you enjoy the view!

“So I pray that God, who gives you hope,

will keep you happy and full of peace as you believe in him.

May you overflow with hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Romans 15:13

But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;
let them sing joyful praises forever.
Protect them,
so all who love your name may be filled with joy.
For you bless the godly, O LORD,
surrounding them with your shield of love.
Psalm 5:11-12

The Blessedness of Believing

A Devotional Journey of Life’s Lessons and God’s Promises

You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask,

‘Who touched me?’

” But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it.”

Mark 5:31,32

Friends, my husband is a compassionate soul, with a caring heart. Richard Meadows, Jr. has a gift for enlightening the hearers of God’s word! Read his poignant devotional and relish on what dwells deep within each of us, which is a desire to draw closer to God! Enjoy:

Just to be close to you, just to be close to you is my desire….”

A few years ago Teddy Turpin, former Minister of Music at Calvary
Baptist Church sang the song that spoke to my heart. He sang about being close
with God and his creation. It was sung early in the morning and usually could be
hummed all day. The thought of being close to the holy would be on my mind as it
is now.

That’s me being so close yet so far away from my creator.

I have a busy day ahead and it includes going to a prayer breakfast and
talking to church folks but at the same time trying to remain present with God.
True the Scriptures are full of reminders of God being present with us, a
Parakletos (Gr.) to help us along the journey. Just as the kids use cell phones
and walk with each other and are not present with one another, I too can ignore
my comforter.

At times I am just that busy. I don’t notice my environment, nature,
people, or the spiritual atmosphere when I am so busy. I am trying more often to
turn inward to listen to my own heart beat and the sound of my own breath.

These are sounds which in the past have aggravated me. They were annoying
because I have no need to hear my own heart beat. I ask myself why the doctors
listen to my breathing and my heart beat. Press on my abdomen and listen to my
digestive system? My inward body tells the doctors more than my mouth. My three major systems; circulatory, pulmonary and digestive tell the doctors how healthy I am.

I imagine that is why Jeremiah wrote “I the LORD search the heart, [I] try
the reins.” With an inward movement maybe I can hear what God hears, or become increasingly aware of what is going on inside of me. Maybe Teddy’s words to his song should be “Just to be close to me.”

The woman in Mark 5 knew that is she got closer to Jesus she would be
healed. I know that if I allow myself to get closer to God I will feel better.
If I allow myself to get closer to me I will feel better.

My inward journey will allow me to hear me and see me more clearly. I share
this because clarity is good for the soul.

Prayer: “Hear me Oh God as I try to hear myself and what you are saying to me by your Spirit. Let your words saturate my being and bring me joy as only you can bring to me your wonderful child. Keep us in the peace that understands every heart and mind. Allow needs to be met and desires to be fulfilled on this day.
